The orchestra was formed in the 1960s by Leonard Davis, a prominent local orchestral conductor.
Our current conductor is Julian Williamson. Over the last 20 years, Julian has been associated with a large number of orchestras and choirs. He has conducted regularly at the South Bank, at St John's Smith Square and the Barbican where, apart from his many concerts with the Camden Choir, he has appeared with the London Bach Orchestra and the English Festival Choir. His work has taken him not only to many parts of Great Britain, but also to Germany, Holland, Zimbabwe and the USA. Julian regularly gives talks on music and history of music at Benslow Music Centre, Herts and at various venues across the UK including North London and the Lake District.
Our orchestra leader is Andy Teague. Andy studied violin at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and worked for many years as a musician prior to his retirement.
Our varied programmes have included Handel, Telemann, Haydn, Beethoven and Mozart; 20th century composers include Elgar, Vaughan-Williams, Sibelius, Finzi, Peter Warlock and Butterworth.
The orchestra has a lively informal atmosphere and the rehearsals are enjoyed by everyone. There are no auditions, and if you wish, you can come and join in or just listen and decide if the SLSO might be for you!
Rehearsals are 10.30am to 12.30pm and we usually have three terms a year.
